A wig does not repair itself. Your own hair replaces damaged strands as it grows; a unit keeps every bit of wear you put into it. That is why the right brush and the right products do more for a wig's lifespan than the price you paid for it.

Use a loop brush, not a paddle brush

A loop brush has continuous looped bristles with no ball tips and no sharp ends, so it glides past the knots in the lace instead of catching and pulling them out. A standard paddle or boar brush snags those knots, and every snag is a strand permanently gone. A wide-tooth comb is the other safe tool, especially on wet wavy and curly hair.

Brush from the ends up

Start at the last two inches, work the tangles out there, then move up an inch and repeat. Brushing from the root down drags every tangle into one dense knot at the ends. This single habit is the difference between a unit that lasts a year and one that matts at the nape in two months.

Serums and leave-ins

Wig hair has no scalp feeding it oil, so it dries out from the mid-lengths down. A light serum on the ends once or twice a week replaces that. Use it sparingly — too much weighs the hair down and attracts dust, and on dense units it builds up fast. Heat protectant is non-negotiable before any iron, because scorching cannot be undone.

Shampoo matters

Use sulphate-free. Sulphates strip the cuticle, and on Remy hair the aligned cuticle is the entire reason the unit does not tangle. For coloured and lifted units, use a colour-safe formula and wash in cool water. For synthetic fibre, use a synthetic-specific shampoo — human hair products weigh the fibre down.

A weekly routine that works

Brush out before and after every wear. Wash every seven to ten wears. Condition the mid-lengths and ends, never the cap. Air dry on a stand. Serum on the ends twice a week. Satin bonnet at night. That is the whole thing.
